We’re the Yoder family, and we’ve been raising puppies on our farm near Hersey in central Michigan since 2004. Shichons are one of our family’s favorites to raise. Every Shichon puppy you see above was born and raised right here by us. We don’t resell puppies from other breeders. Our children help feed, play with and care for the puppies every day, so your teddy bear puppy comes home happy, social and used to people.

What Is a Shichon?

A Shichon (also called a Teddy Bear dog, Zuchon or Shih-Chon) is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise. With their round faces, button eyes and fluffy coats, it’s easy to see where the “teddy bear” name comes from.

• Size: usually 9–15 lbs and 9–12 inches tall when full grown. Their fluffy coat makes them look bigger than they are.
• Coat: soft and plush, low-shedding, in colors like white, cream, apricot, black and parti. It needs brushing a few times a week and a trim every 6–8 weeks to prevent matting.
• Temperament: sweet, friendly and playful. Shichons are great snugglers but still have plenty of energy for play, which can be hard to find in a small dog.
• Lifespan: often 12–16 years with good care.

Is a Shichon Right for You?

Shichons are one of the best small breeds for families. They usually love kids, get along with other pets and are happy in apartments, condos or houses. They’re people dogs and do best when they aren’t left alone for long periods, so they’re a good fit for homes where someone is around or where they can tag along. They may bark occasionally, like most small breeds. Their low-shedding coat makes them a popular choice for families with mild allergies, though no dog is 100% hypoallergenic.

Getting Your Shichon Home

Pick up your puppy at our farm near Hersey at no extra cost. We can also hand-deliver by car anywhere in Michigan and the surrounding states, or meet you halfway. Live farther away? Is a Shichon the same as a Teddy Bear puppy?

Yes. “Teddy Bear” is the popular nickname for the Shichon (Shih Tzu × Bichon Frise). You may also see it called a Zuchon.

Do Shichons shed?

Very little. Their coat holds loose hair, so regular brushing and grooming are important to keep it from matting.
